Hardware beta testing app: which tool fits which job
Which hardware beta testing app you need depends on which side of the programme you're on. Companies running a beta use a platform to recruit testers and triage feedback, such as Centercode or BetaTesting, while the person holding the unit needs a way to capture timestamped evidence and write it up. BetaSuite: Tester's Toolkit (betasuite.app) is an iPhone, iPad and Android app for the tester side; it has no team dashboard and it isn't an app-distribution tool.
Two sides of a hardware beta
Every hardware beta has a company side and a tester side. Most results for "beta testing app" are built for the first.
| Side | Who | The job | Typical tools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Company | Programme manager, product or QA team | Recruit testers, set tasks, collect and triage feedback, report back to the team | A beta platform, or an in-house form, forum or group |
| Tester | The person with the unit | Use it for weeks, capture evidence when something happens, write it up and send it | A camera app, notes, a spreadsheet, or a tester-side app such as BetaSuite |
A third group sits next to both: app-distribution tools such as TestFlight and Google Play's testing tracks. They matter in a hardware beta only for the companion app.
Quick pick
| If you... | Reach for |
|---|---|
| Run a programme and need to recruit, manage and triage many testers | A company-side platform or your own system. Not BetaSuite. |
| Were invited into a programme that has its own portal or form | Their portal to submit. A camera or BetaSuite to capture and organise the evidence you upload. If they don't want a report from you, BetaSuite's Basic mode is enough. |
| Need stamped photos or video for a job record or inspection | BetaSuite in Basic mode: the timestamp camera on its own, without sessions or reports. Another app only if a whole crew shares one gallery, someone else must be able to verify the time, or it has to be free. |
| Are testing one or two units over a short period | A spreadsheet and your camera roll. Set it up carefully and it works. |
| Send weekly reports with video evidence, severity ratings and a PDF | BetaSuite: Tester's Toolkit. |
| Test a unit under NDA and want AI help without cloud upload | BetaSuite with Confidential Mode on an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence. On Android, Confidential Mode means no AI. |
| Are sending your own app build to testers | TestFlight or Google Play testing, or a platform. Not BetaSuite. |
Comparison table
| Option | Built for | Good at | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer's own portal, form or group | The company's programme | Matching exactly what that programme wants to receive | The format is theirs. Capturing and organising evidence is still up to you. |
| Company-side platforms (Centercode, BetaTesting) | Companies running tests | Recruiting testers, collecting and managing feedback, reporting for the company | The company picks the tool. You join a test; you don't set one up to document your own. |
| Timestamp camera apps (for example Timemark) | Photo documentation such as inspections and site work | Putting date, time and often location on a photo | Check whether the app has fields for severity, repro steps and protocol results, and what its reports contain. |
| Spreadsheet, Google Forms and camera roll | Anyone | Free, flexible, familiar | Photos live apart from the rows that explain them, and timestamps are metadata unless burned in. |
| TestFlight and Google Play testing | Developers sending app builds to testers | Getting a companion-app build to testers | They distribute software. They don't capture evidence about a physical unit. |
| BetaSuite: Tester's Toolkit | A tester with the unit, on iPhone, iPad or Android | Burned-in timestamps (Basic mode works as a plain timestamp camera), dual recording, structured findings, protocols, PDF and Word reports | No team dashboard. Paid up front. Mobile only. Stamps use the phone's clock, with no verification step. Charge-port logging is Android-only. Not for distributing builds. |
Facts about other tools come from their own pages, checked 2 Oct 2026. Details are in the sources below.
Each option in more detail
Manufacturer beta portals, forms and groups
Most programmes run through the manufacturer's own channel: an application form, then a forum, group or email thread. Lymow's public beta-testing page for its Lymow One mower (checked 2 Oct 2026) says applicants fill in a Google Form whose last question asks for photos or videos of their lawn. It also says testers "are expected to provide detailed reports on mapping performance, daily mowing routines, various app functions, and overall usage experience" over a two-month period. The page doesn't say what format those reports should take, so the structure is up to the tester.
Use whatever channel the programme specifies. A capture tool and a report template (see how to write a beta test report) make what you send easier to act on.
Company-side platforms: Centercode and BetaTesting
Centercode's site (checked 2 Oct 2026) describes its platform as a way to manage "in-the-wild user tests", lists beta testing, user acceptance testing and field testing among its uses, and names "Connected Products" as an industry. Its help centre says feedback is submitted through Feedback Types, with Issues, Ideas, Praise and Discussions by default, "all fully customizable".
BetaTesting's site (checked 2 Oct 2026) calls itself "The real human beta testing platform". It lists "In Home: Field testing for physical products" among its use cases and "Consumer products" among its industries, and its menu includes a "Join as Beta Tester" link alongside "Get Started".
Both are company-side tools. The company designs the test and picks the platform, and you answer in that platform's format. If you're invited into one, you can still capture evidence in BetaSuite and attach the files to what you submit.
Timestamp camera apps
Timestamp cameras print the date and time, often with location, onto your photos. Timemark's page (checked 2 Oct 2026) says it "records real date, time, GPS location and notes on each photo when you take it". It also lists report generation and a web portal, and says it's free to download with a Free plan that puts a small Timemark logo on photos. The App Store listing for Timestamp Camera Basic (checked 2 Oct 2026) says it adds a timestamp to photos and video in real time, with GPS and address support.
These apps are built around stamping photos for jobs such as inspections and site work. BetaSuite does that job too. If a stamped photo or video is all you need, switch BetaSuite to Basic mode (Settings > App mode). That's a mode inside BetaSuite, not the Timestamp Camera Basic app above. Basic mode keeps every capture tool, including dual recording and Instant Capture, and leaves out projects, sessions and reports, in the same one-off purchase. Another timestamp app fits better only if you need a time someone else can verify, a gallery a whole crew shares, or a free app. If you also need severity-rated findings, repro steps, protocol results and one report for a whole test period, BetaSuite's Advanced mode adds them; with any other app, look at what its reports contain before you commit. More on that in timestamp camera app with reports.
Spreadsheets, Google Forms and the camera roll
For one or two units over a short test, this is a sound choice. It's free, everyone knows it and you control the columns. Google's help (checked 2 Oct 2026) says a file-upload question requires responders to sign in to a Google Account, and that uploaded files are stored in a folder on the form owner's Google Drive.
What a spreadsheet won't do is put the time in the picture or keep a photo attached to the row that explains it. If you go this way, these columns work:
- Date, time and timezone
- Unit, firmware and app version
- Test or step, and result (pass, fail, N/A)
- Severity and category
- Steps to reproduce, expected, actual
- Evidence file names, matching the files on your phone
- Workaround and notes
TestFlight and Google Play testing
Apple says TestFlight "makes it easy for testers to give feedback on your apps, games, and App Clips" before they're published (checked 2 Oct 2026). Google Play's closed testing is for trying "pre-release versions of your app" with a wider set of testers (checked 2 Oct 2026). Both distribute software builds. In a hardware beta they matter only for the companion app, and they don't capture evidence about the physical unit.
What BetaSuite: Tester's Toolkit does
BetaSuite is for people who beta test physical products in the field, such as robot mowers, robot vacuums, e-bikes, drones, 3D printers, cameras and chargers, plus the companion apps that ship with them. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android.
- Burned-in timestamp. A second-accurate date and time is printed into every photo and video you capture, and it can't be switched off. Optional extras: GPS and place name, weather, season, timezone, device info, a custom watermark and a logo.
- Dual recording. Your screen and the camera in one video, with the rear camera as the default. How it works.
- Instant Capture. Saves the last 15–30 seconds after something happens, for faults you can't predict.
- Sessions and markers. A timeline with one-tap markers, voice notes and transcription.
- Structured findings. Severity, category, expected against actual, steps to reproduce, tags and attachments.
- Test protocols. Pass/fail, rating, NPS and choice questions, with an optional required photo, video or dual recording per step. Build one free in the Protocol Builder and share it as a code. Template and examples.
- Reports. PDF and Word, with an At a Glance page and findings sorted worst first, plus a JSON and CSV data sidecar. See the sample report and how to write one.
- Confidential Mode. For units under NDA: blocks cloud AI and cloud uploads, and warns you before you share or export anything.
- Everything on the device. No account, and data stays on your phone unless you share it. 28 languages.
- Paid up front. A one-time purchase with no subscription, ads or in-app purchases. The price is set in each store.
When BetaSuite is the wrong choice
Skip it if any of these describe you.
- You need a team dashboard. BetaSuite is one tester on one device. There are no accounts, shared projects or live views across testers. The free Protocol Builder can merge testers' exported results files in your browser, but that's a file merge, not a dashboard.
- You want to distribute builds or recruit testers. It has no connection to TestFlight or Google Play testing, and it doesn't recruit testers, manage cohorts or hand out builds.
- You won't pay up front. It's a paid app with no free tier or trial, and no subscription. The price differs by store, so check your listing. If the budget is zero, a camera app and a spreadsheet will cover the basics.
- You need charge-port voltage, current or wattage on an iPhone. That logging is Android-only. iPhone and iPad show charging state and battery level only, because iOS doesn't expose those sensors to apps.
- You're testing software only, such as a website or an app with no hardware. BetaSuite is built for physical products and the apps that ship with them.
- You need a web or desktop version. BetaSuite is mobile only. The Protocol Builder is the one tool that runs in a browser.
- Cloud AI isn't allowed for your unit. AI is optional and asks for your consent for each feature. Confidential Mode blocks cloud AI, and on Android that means no AI at all, because Apple Intelligence is an iPhone and iPad feature.
Don't need a report? If your programme only accepts its own portal or form, or you only want stamped photos and video, switch BetaSuite to Basic mode (Settings > App mode). It keeps every capture tool, including dual recording and Instant Capture, and leaves out projects, sessions and reports, so it works as a plain timestamp camera. BetaSuite doesn't submit to third-party portals, so you upload the files yourself, and you can switch back to Advanced at any time without losing anything.
Frequently asked questions
- What app can I use to document a hardware beta test?
It depends on the job. A spreadsheet and your camera roll cover a simple log. BetaSuite: Tester's Toolkit (betasuite.app) is a timestamp camera and a reporting tool in one app: use its Basic mode if you only need stamped photos and video, and Advanced mode when you also want structured findings and a PDF or Word report from your phone. If the manufacturer has its own portal, you still submit there.
- Is BetaSuite a TestFlight alternative?
No. TestFlight distributes app builds to testers. BetaSuite helps a tester document faults in a physical product, and it has no connection to TestFlight or Google Play testing tracks. Someone testing a hardware companion app might use both.
- Is BetaSuite an alternative to Centercode or BetaTesting?
No, they work on different sides of a programme. Centercode and BetaTesting are company-side platforms for running tests. BetaSuite is a tester-side app. A tester invited into a programme on one of those platforms could still use BetaSuite to capture and write up evidence.
- How is BetaSuite different from a timestamp camera app?
BetaSuite is a timestamp camera app too: it burns the date and time into every photo and video, and the stamp can't be switched off. If that's all you need, use BetaSuite's Basic mode: photos, video, screen and camera recorded in one video, and Instant Capture of the last 15–30 seconds, with no projects, sessions or reports. Advanced mode adds markers on a session timeline, findings with severity and repro steps, test protocols and a PDF or Word report. Either way it's one purchase, with no subscription, no ads and no trial that runs out. Another timestamp app fits better only if you need a time someone else can verify, a gallery a whole crew shares, or a free app.
- How much does BetaSuite cost?
It's a one-time purchase with no subscription, ads or in-app purchases. The price is set in each store, so check the App Store or Google Play listing for your country.
- Can a programme manager use BetaSuite with a group of testers?
Yes, with limits. You can write a test protocol free in the browser, testers import it with a code, and you can merge their exported results files in your browser. There is no live dashboard or shared project. Volume purchase is possible through Apple Business Manager on iOS, and for an Android cohort you can contact us and we can arrange Google Play promo codes. See the programme managers page.
